You need certain documents at different stages of the Express Entry application process.
Documents for your profile
You don’t have to upload documents when submitting your profile, but you might need information from some or all of these documents:
- A passport or travel document
- If you hold a Venezuelan passport: Additional steps may be required when creating your profile or completing your application.
- Results from a language test
- Documentation proving Canadian education or an educational credential assessment report for immigration purposes if:
- You’re applying through the Federal Skilled Workers Program, or
- You want to receive points for education obtained outside Canada
- Provincial nomination (if applicable)
- A written job offer from a Canadian employer (if applicable)
- Proof of work experience
- Certificate of qualification in a trade occupation issued by a Canadian province or territory (if applicable)
- Proof of funds
Documents for your application for permanent residence
Starting from October 1, 2023, it’s no longer necessary to undergo a medical examination before submitting your application for permanent residency via Express Entry. Learn about the timing of medical exams and the required documents.
If you receive an invitation to apply, you’ll be required to upload copies of the documents used in your profile (refer to the list above). Additionally, most applicants will need to upload the following documents:
- Police certificates
- Proof of funds
- Birth certificate (if you have dependent children)
- Use of a Representative form (if you’ve hired a representative)
- Common-law union form (if you’ve indicated your marital status as “common-law”)
- Marriage certificate (if you’ve indicated your marital status as “married”)
- Divorce certificate and legal separation agreement (if you’ve indicated your marital status as “divorced”)
- Death certificate (if you’ve indicated your marital status as “widowed”)
- Adoption certificate (if a dependent child is listed as “adopted”)
Other documents
You are only required to provide these documents if they are specifically listed in your customized document checklist. Failure to submit these documents will not necessarily result in the refusal or rejection of your application. They are solely utilized to verify if you fulfil the criteria of the program you are applying for.
These documents include:
- Evidence of your relationship to a family member in Canada
- Digital photographs for identity confirmation
- Additional names to confirm any aliases
- Authorization to release personal information to a designated individual form
- Any other documents you believe are pertinent to your application.
