10 ATTITUDES THAT BREEDS COURAGE
It may interest you to know that courage is not genetic. Yes, you heard me right, it isn’t! people who possess it are not necessarily born with it. Do you really know how they happen to possess such? Well, they developed and built it up, that’s all they basically did.
Now, why do you think some people have courage, while others just wish they had it? It is not that those people who have it are specially created, neither do they have the tendency of possessing it. The basic difference between a courageous and non-courageous person is just determination. The determination to take quick and drastic action when everyone else is “playing it safe” (as they often say when they are not willing to take a certain risk).
Courageous people are those that take the road less travelled because they know and understand that such a path leads to more lasting success. One thing I love about those people is that they don’t really care if you agree with their decision or not, they still will go ahead with it anyways. And this makes them exceptional because they can never be seen “going with the crowd”, even if it involves them losing their possessions or even their lives.
Courage actually yields confidence. If you tend to be courageous in certain areas of your life, you tend to also be confident in yourself eventually. I think both are complimentary.
No doubt, we cannot just be courageous in everything about life, there are still some things we really cannot face, no matter how courageous we seem.
Take me for example. I can be such a wimp when it comes to handling electrical appliances or anything that seem electrical. I always think that all of them have the potential to shock me to death, so I’m always extremely careful when it comes to handling such.
By the way, courage doesn’t just upsurge all of a sudden. Certain attitudes bring out the courage and boldness in you.
You may even portray one or some of these attitudes without you even realizing that it is a determining factor of how courageous you’ll be.
Well, being that you’re reading this article already, you’ll then get to know these attitudes and realize how it has been of great help to fueling your courage and boldness. And you might as well adopt one or more, to enhance the courageousness in you.
Here are 10 of such attitudes:
-
FEARLESSNESS
I think this is probably one of the many traits of a courageous person. This attitude is one of the driving forces of courage.
I know you might be thinking that fearlessness is a lack of fear and that it’s not possible to not be fearful at some point in life. Well, lack of fear is definitely not possible because we basically need fear to survive certain things in life.
However, fearlessness is actually the lack of fear of fear. In order words, you may be fearful, but you’re definitely not afraid of such fear in question because the courage in you is greater. I mean way greater than the fear you can ever have.

SPEAKING UP FOR ONESELF
If you’re the type that boldly speaks for yourself, then you’re probably more courageous than you think, trust me!
Speaking up can be so intimidating most times, especially when it involves speaking to a larger audience of people. It takes lots of guts and nerves to be able to speak up your mind in any given environment.
I think most people don’t like speaking up for themselves, not because they don’t want to, but fear of what people will think of them prevents them. I guess that’s why there seem to be less courageous people around us today, and this really has to change!
-
WILLINGNESS TO TAKE RISKS
Courageous people are risk-takers. They are always ready and willing to take risks no matter how dangerous they may appear to be.
In our world today, we have lots of average individuals who dread the thought of taking risks. They prefer “playing it safe”, and not wanting to do anything that will involve them stepping out a little from their “safe area”.
If you really want to build courage over time, then you should be willing and ready to take risks in any area of your life. Playing it safe won’t take you any further than you’re at present, because you wouldn’t know what you’re missing out from by simply avoiding those risks.
-
SHEER HONESTY AND TRANSPARENCY
Another attitude that breeds courage is honesty and transparency, and both of them go hand-in-hand.
If you’re the honest type and you always tend to address issues with transparency and clearness, then the courage to do certain things will automatically grow in you because you know you really have nothing in particular to hide, and you also know that you treat people with fairness. You wouldn’t be afraid of doing anything in that line. Courageous people possess such an attitude because they know how helpful and valuable it is.
-
BELIEVING IN YOURSELF ENOUGH
We all have gone through scenarios where we wanna do a particular thing, we then tell it to a family or a close friend seeking their advice. But then, we’re shocked at how the response comes because they somehow didn’t believe the thing will work out well. At that point, we become down in our spirits because of the discouragement.
However, the only attitude that could have made us unshaken is having a firm belief in ourselves enough that other people’s opinions wouldn’t make us change our minds.
Believe in yourself enough at all times and then you’ll see the amount of courage you’ll build over time.
-
CONSISTENCY
One funny thing about us humans is that we all want to be successful, but by the time we’re told that we can only get there by being consistent, we often relent.
As it is, there are no shortcuts to a successful life, and even if you happen to find any, good luck trying it out for it will be leading you straight to your doom.
There is probably no better way to build courage than to be consistent in the things you do. Consistency will make you spot errors that you wouldn’t have even noticed when you do it occasionally. Build up more courage by being consistent with whatever you do in your journey to success.
-
LEARNING FROM YOUR FAILURES/MISTAKES
At some point in your life, whether you like it or not, you will fail. You’ll make several mistakes in your life because you’re definitely not a perfect human—none of us is.
However, your ability to admit, embrace and learn from your failures and mistakes is truly an act of courage. Just so you know, it is not everyone that can actually face their failures and mistakes, it takes real courage and boldness to do such a thing.
If you honestly form the habit of always admitting your mistakes and learning lessons from your failures, you would actually be way more courageous to face a bigger challenge.

SELF-DISCIPLINED
A self-disciplined attitude is simply doing what you know you ought to do and restraining from what you’re not supposed to be doing.
Having a self-disciplined attitude is not what you acquire overnight or with the twinkle of an eye. It actually takes strong willpower and volition to be able to discipline yourself in the areas of your life you want development.
And as it is, having a self-disciplined attitude makes you develop courage too, in the sense that if you know you’ve disciplined yourself in a particular area of your life, you would always have the courage to face it anywhere else in the world.

OVERLOOKING OBSTACLES
When we’re faced with obstacles and challenges, we’re often tempted to dwell on them, whining and complaining over them. Overlooking obstacles is really not an easy task, it takes only courageous people to be able to do such a thing.
You have to realize that there is actually no problem without an already successful solution and you cannot really get what you want out of life without you first be willing to face and overlook obstacles.
Overlooking obstacles makes you see the bigger and better picture; you’ll then realize that those obstacles are only channels and conduits to the actual place you’re going to, so don’t fight it.

DECISIVENESS
Being decisive simply means standing your ground; being firm in your decision making process and being determined to take proper action alongside.
If there is really one thing that we humans struggle with daily, is our ability to make a decision, be sure of it and follow it duly. Indecisiveness has made it impossible for us to decide on a particular thing and be sure enough to take action with it. This is because the courage to stand our ground is lacking.
From now onward, make it a habit of being determined and resolute in your decision, and the courage you think you lack will eventually emerge.
