How Jamb caps help to streamline our admission – FUNAI director of admission
Director of Admissions, Alex DEkueme University, Ebonyi State has declared that the automation of admissions into the nation’s tertiary institutions through the Central Admissions Processing System (CAPS) has greatly eased the entire process of admissions.
These reflect the feelings of many admission handlers and other stakeholders in the nation’s tertiary institutions. Also registering his commendation, which was one of many to come the way of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board(JAMB), was the retired Director of Admissions, Mr Noble Onukwue, who currently works as Director of Admissions at Alex Ekwueme University, Ebonyi State, otherwise called AE-FUNAI.
Mr Onukwue was Director of Admissions when CAPS was introduced. The admission specialist, in a chat with JAMBulletin in Abuja, said AE-FUNAI had no challenges embracing the new admission regime. This, he said, was because he had brought the knowledge and expertise he had acquired for over three decades to bear in the University’s Admission processes.
He said, “CAPS, which remains a revolution in the conduct of admissions into tertiary institutions in the country, was evolved by the administration of Prof. Is-haq Oloyede”
“CAPS is a very transparent, standardized, cost-free and highly efficient admissions platform. The automated platform integrates the interests of all stakeholders, it’s user-friendly, easily accessible with highly- manageable admission processes which give room for controlled flexibility devoid of manipulation.”

Continuing, he said, “Its delivery is timely and has largely impacted positively on sustaining the AE-FUNAI admission process and, indeed, its academic calendar.”
Mr Onukwe advised candidates to always ensure that they accept their admissions on CAPS and print their admission letters before proceeding to even visit the school portal.
Commenting on how he tackles Admission lobbyists and racketeers who might want to circumvent the admission process, the one-time director of Admissions, said, “To ward off undue pressure, you should follow due process by admitting possibly 80% of your quota in the first round of your admission exercise. By so doing, you would have pulled the rug off the feet of lobbyists, pressure groups and undue influencers.”
He said, “The visionary leadership of the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Chinedum Nwajiuba, and his team is poised to attain world-class university status in teaching, learning, research and community services.”
He said, “Making the university world-class is attainable in the emerging circumstances manifesting in the various expression of interests from both local and international bodies to partner with the institution.
Similarly, it might interest you to know that AE-FUNAI is one University where you are sure of when you will graduate as it has a stable academic calendar hence you know your date of convocation.
“This is one university where you collect your degree certificate with your passport embossed on it on the day of convocation. This is one university you go for your NYSC immediately after graduation. This is one university where there is zero records of students’ restiveness.”

He said the decision to emboss the passports of graduands on their certificates was to add spice and make the certificate more credible and fool-proof against any infractions.
On the renewed love of the Board’s retired staff by institutions, Onukwue said, “JAMB and the various tertiary institutions always work in tandem to achieve the Board’s mandate of admitting suitably qualified candidates into Nigerian tertiary institutions.
In view of the innovations that the Board has continued to evolve such as the CBT, CAPS, etc., the need to seamlessly implement these innovations in the institutions has deepened the relationship between JAMB and the tertiary institutions.
Also, the quality of the staff of the Board particularly their expertise in the area of admissions and related processes has also been a selling point.
He said, “The emergence of JAMB as an organisation can rightly be said to be a product of the desire by the universities to harmonise their admissions. It was, therefore, not surprising that the pioneer Registrar of JAMB, Mr M.S. Angulu, was a University Registrar while the current JAMB Registrar, Prof. Is-haq Oloyede, is a former Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ilorin.
Preference for the retired staff of JAMB by tertiary institutions, which is very much pronounced in this dispensation, is, therefore, in line with the desire to reinvigorate the cordial relationship existing between JAMB and the tertiary institutions under Prof. Is-haq Oloyede and which was embraced by the leadership of the institution led by Prof. Nwajiuba.
As a proof of partnership that worked coupled with good personal credentials, it was easy to seal a deal thereby opening up opportunities to both parties in the overall interest of national service delivery.”
