ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS FOR THE FOUR-YEAR DEGREE PROGRAMME (UTME)
Candidates seeking admission into the Four-Year Degree Programme should possess any of the following qualifications:
At least five Ordinary Level credit passes in WASC, WAEC, SSCE/GCE, NECO, SSCE or at least five merit-level passes in the Teachers Grade II (TC II) examinations or its recognized equivalents at not more than two sittings. The subjects should include English Language and French.
Note: UTME subjects are:
- Use of English.
- Any combination of three subjects either in Arts, Sciences or Social Sciences.
Candidates for syllabus ‘B’ programme need not have previous knowledge of French provided that they have credit-level passes in at least one Arts subject and four other subjects one of which should be English Language in WASC, WAEC, SSCE/GCE, NECO-SSCE or at least five merit-level passes in the Teachers Grade II (TC II) examinations two of which should be Arts subjects at not more than two sittings.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS FOR THE THREE-YEAR FULL-TIME DEGREE PROGRAMME (DIRECT ENTRY)
In addition to A above, candidates who possess any of the following qualifications may be considered for admission:
- At least two Advanced Level passes in the General Certificate of Education (GCE) or Higher School Certificate (HSC) or its recognized equivalent at not more than two- sittings in the relevant Arts subjects.
- At least a credit-level pass in a Diploma in the relevant subject from the University of Benin or its equivalent (Upper Credit)from any recognizedUniversity.
- National Certificate of Education (NCE) with at least a credit level pass in English/ French from a recognized College of Education. In addition, candidates should have at least an overall merit-level pass.
- Diploma (DiplômeD’EtudesFrançaises3eDegré) of the Alliance Française, the Nigerian French Language Village, or its equivalent from a recognized institution.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS FOR THE SIX-YEAR PART-TIME DEGREE PROGRAMME
Candidates seeking admission into this Programme should possess any of the following qualifications:
- At least five credit-level passes in WASC, WAECSSCE/GCE, NECO SSC or at least five merit-level passes in the Teachers Grade II (TC II) examinations or its recognized equivalent at not more than two sittings. The subjects should include the English Language. Such Candidates will be required to show evidence of proven knowledge of the French Language (e.g. Alliance Française Certificate).
- For entry into the second year, candidates should possess at least a credit level pass in the National Certificate of Education (NCE) or at least a credit-level pass in a Diploma in the relevant subject or equivalent qualification from any recognized University.
DIPLOMA IN FRENCH (DIF)
Candidates seeking admission into this programme should possess at least four credit-level passes in the WASC, WAECSSCE/GCE, NECO, SSCE or the Teachers Grade II (TC II) or its recognized equivalent at not more than two sittings.

VISION
To fulfil and sustain the laudable vision of the founding fathers of the University of Benin through the training of well-grounded graduates of French and/or other European languages who are intellectually equipped to contribute meaningfully to national development and regional integration.
MISSION
1. Provide students with a sound knowledge of French and/or other European languages and the corresponding cultures and civilizations.
2. Equip students with the necessary knowledge and skills that will enable them to serve their country through contacts with Francophone other countries in many capacities such as commercial, diplomatic, cultural, etc.
3. Equip students with necessary and competence that will enable them to promote international exchange and mutual understanding.
4. Equip students with the knowledge and skills that enable them to explore through an entrepreneurial approach, the vast potentials of the country.
DEGREE PROGRAMME
The B.A. programme in French aims at providing students with a sound grasp of written and oral French coupled with a thorough study of the French Language and a wide knowledge of literature written in French and a general familiarity with the culture and civilization of France and Francophone countries.
Students are expected to maintain a balance between these aspects of French studies throughout the course. The programme also emphasizes Translation and Interpretation Studies, which give the students greater job opportunities and enable them to contribute more effectively to national development.
In their year one, year two and year three, students are expected to study other approved languages offered in the Department- (German, Russian, Spanish, Portuguese) or in the Faculty as well as courses in General Studies and CED. They may also choose to combine their study of French with another subject at degree level.
The duration of the B.A. degree programme is three years for Direct Entry students and four years for students entering Year One through JAMB examinations, including Syllabus “B” Alternative programme.
PROBATION/TRANSFER/WITHDRAWAL
A student, who obtains less than 18 but more than 9 credits at the end of the academic year, shall be required to transfer from the Faculty or go on probation. A Candidate who obtains less than 9 credits shall be required to withdraw from the University.
Condition to be fulfilled before the degree is awarded
A student is expected to pass all the prescribed courses and earn the required credits, i.e. 166 credits for the four-year programme and 128 credits for the three-year degree programme.
