6 PRACTICAL WAYS TO DEVELOP A POSITIVE MINDSET
As you already know, the brain is the organ of the mind. The mind then happens to be the centre of all forms of thinking. And one bizarre thing about the mind is, if not properly controlled, it has the natural tendency of taking in everything that comes it’s way, whether good or bad.
Like I said before, our thinking; both the foolish and wise, crazy and sane, shallow and deep, all comes from the mind, and we utterly make decisions based on this thinking. And as it is, positive and negative thinking cannot both exist in the same mind, you either have one or the other.
Apparently, positive thinking tends to yield good decision-making, and the reverse is for negative thinking. That’s why it’s important for you to develop a positive mindset, so as to pave way for wise and sound decisions.
So, if you really want to navigate your mind into the positive directions of thinking, below are 6 ways that can help you get there.
BE PRESENT IN YOUR THINKING
Many a time, thoughts; be it positive or negative, often arises from your subconscious and somehow crawls into your present life, which then affects your decision making. When you do things subconsciously, it is automated. You’re likely not aware of it, often a time.
Any thoughts can arise within you, but your ability to be present in it, and aware of it, is what matters most. As Joyce Meyer will always say, “Think about what you’re thinking about”. This just means to be conscious of whatever you think.
When you become aware of your thinking, filtering out the negative from the positive will be a much easier thing to do. Learn to always silence those negative thoughts of yours, and make positive thoughts a constant in your mind. Doing this is quite important because positive thoughts build you and create a sense of confidence in you, while negative thoughts will eventually ruin you.
And one disheartening thing about this is that it doesn’t matter how optimistic or how hopeful you may be, negative thoughts just somehow always find their way through and into you. However, whether you’re aware of it or not, you possess the controlling power to always stop those negative thoughts from running and ruining your life. Howbeit, “whether you think you can or think you can’t, you are right,” said Henry Ford.

BE A FLEXIBLE THINKER
Thinking flexibly simply means having the ability to adapt and adjust to a whole new and different idea. In other words, it reveals your willingness to regularly “update” your thinking for constant growth and development of your mind.
Being flexible in your thinking can help you to discern those thoughts of yours that are not of positive impact. Flexibility in your thinking can help you to be in a state of self-realization. You fully know if any new idea is worth thinking about, and also how it will go a long way in affecting your personality and totality as a Being.
Right there in your mind, there are thoughts that are harmful and injurious to your thinking, and they can spark a negative mindset in you over time. If you’re the type that is rigid and unyielding in your thinking, you may not perceive those thoughts as bad. You’re likely to always reject new ideas and thinking because you feel they might not be right and that you have your own “right” thinking imbibed in you already. This is self-deceit at its peak.
Your rigidity will always blind you to see the difference between right and wrong thinking because the only thing it wants to do is to not change. However, being a flexible thinker will prevent this seemingly insane and foolish act of rigidity, and it will also help you to grow into positive thinking.

EXAMINE YOUR VALUES AND BELIEFS
Mahatma Gandhi once said, “Your belief become your thoughts, your thoughts become your words, your words become your actions, your actions become your habits, your habits become your values, your values become your destiny”.
So, developing a positive mindset involves you examining and reviewing your belief system and those things you tag as “valuable”. If you have not searched within you by identifying and eliminating those beliefs and values that are not worthy, then you really can’t build a life of constant positive thinking. Reasons being that the faultiness from within you will definitely affect your mindset. Just as Ralph Waldo Emerson said, “What lies behind us and what lies before us are tiny matters, compared to what lies within us”.
Good values and belief systems are factors that can help to shape your mind into positive thinking. If you’re honest with yourself, identifying those unworthy values and beliefs wouldn’t be so difficult. In essence, you should endeavour to trash them out totally, so as to create room for new and better ones.

READ BOOKS THAT HELPS BUILD THE MIND
One of the best ways to learning and building a positive mindset is by reading. Read and learn as much as you can, because “learning never exhausts the mind”—Leonardo da Vinci
Reading good books has a way of building up your mind and making you see things beyond its superficial. According to Carl Sagan, “Books are like seeds“. They can lie dormant for centuries and then flower in the most unpromising soil”. Pick up a book that can grow the mind and read through it intently. Don’t bother about how the whole growth process will occur, it will eventually happen when you least expected.
Positive thinking can be developed through consistent reading, and in the process of reading new things are learned. As George Santayana said, “The wisest mind has something yet to learn”. There are varieties of things you can learn from reading a book, which can help you change your perspective of the world. By reading vastly, your mind becomes open to new possibilities and opportunities, then your perception begins to deepen into the realm of positivity.

MOVE WITH THE RIGHT COMPANY
The company you keep has a way of influencing your thoughts and your actions. When you’re with the right company, where you guys constantly build and encourage rather than belittling and discouraging each other, you tend to develop a positive mind over time, because the people around you are so optimistic and they always say the right words.
Words that are true and that helps to grow your mind. On the contrary, when you move with the wrong company, whose pessimism is ingrained in their minds, then you would somehow find yourself thinking the same way they do because you subconsciously believe and listen to whatever they tell you. They have succeeded in transferring or should I say, sharing their minds with yours, and that’s terrible.
Learn to always move with the right set of people because no matter how situations may seem, these people will always see the brighter and bigger picture. They’ll always find a way to think in the positive direction, and that’s a good thing.
This set of people shouldn’t be “let loose” because whenever your light seems dim and gloomy, they will always be willing to rekindle it with their inner fire.

DON’T BE DEFINED BY YOUR EMOTIONS
Oftentimes, your emotions are what actually fuel most of your responses, thinking, actions, behaviour and even the way you see others. It happens to be what people usually cling to, for guidance and directions. But so you know, your emotions are not always right.
That’s the more reason you shouldn’t make the mistake of letting your emotions affect the way you think. Don’t allow your emotions to be the deciding factor in your life. Doing this will only wreak havoc. Emotions are temporary feelings—they never last forever. And when you’re drawn to always wanna unite your emotions with your thinking, negativity will always come in because our feelings are full of crap most of the time.
So, it is very vital that you lead your emotions and don’t ever allow them to lead you, even for a second. Positive thinking often develops and arise from a controlled-emotions.
