Is technology the new oil? I beg to ask.
With the way the world is moving, you would admit with me that this is a valid question.
Quite recently there has been a lot of news in the technology industry. Different job offers, career development advice, mentorship platforms, etc have all been on social media platforms.
It seems as though everyone is now a Tech bro or Tech sis or aiming to be one. People are learning tech skills and switching careers. Web development, product design, UI/UX design, etc have become the new professional courses parents are encouraging their children to pursue.
It’s not just about the passion anymore. For some, it is where the money is. Safe to say, a lot of people are following the money. We keep hearing big figures made from the industry on a daily basis.
With the new surge in the tech industry, where does it leave the people with other skill sets?
Is one making a mistake in sticking with make-up artistry rather than web development?
Some say that the future is tech. Does this mean that with no tech skills there is no place for you in the future? Is it possible that tech jobs take over the work industry? These and many more may be questions you are asking.
ADVANCEMENT IN TECHNOLOGY
The truth is, technology is fast advancing and the world is moving fast with it. There are a lot of innovative inventions now that we didn’t think were possible in the recent past and more are coming, enough to keep the world on its toes.
It is not surprising that companies and corporations are tilting more and more towards the tech industry. It either flows with the tide or folds up.
With the employment market becoming larger, employers are looking for people who fit their companies and can be efficient. Most persons seeking jobs in a bid to stand out are learning tech skills. Having a tech skill has become an advantage, and most times a requirement.
Of course not, this does not mean every other skill that isn’t in tech has become obsolete, at least not yet. Technology has not stopped our lifestyle or the business opportunities it brings.
People still buy and sew clothes, do makeup, bake pastries, order food, etc. There are still jobs in other industries. Lawyers, Accountants, Doctors, Engineers, HR personnel, artists, etc.
Having a career/business in these industries is still very relevant today. We haven’t reached the point where technology has taken over the entire market. So, there are still enough jobs to keep everyone busy and happy.
But technology will keep advancing and some things will change. What happens when that time comes? What should you do to keep up with the changes happening?
Here are a few things you can do;
HOW TO KEEP UP WITH TECH ADVANCEMENT
-
Choose a career path
With a lot of platforms and opportunities out there, choosing a career path will help you streamline and focus on what you want to do. That way, you can know the training to go for and opportunities to take.
It is ok to dive into a lot of things and want to be everywhere. But before then, it’s important to build a track record. You can learn better and grow faster when you choose and stick to a career path.
Don’t be a jack of all trades if you can’t be good at them. Competence is highly sought after in the labour market. People want to know what you can do. They want to see it.
-
Find ways to improve
The world is constantly improving, it is only expected that you should too. While it is ok to build on an existing track, you also have to find problems or loopholes in your field that aren’t meeting the needs of society as it is today and find a way to improve on them.
That way, you can be assured of keeping your business without fear of being obsolete. Learn added skills, encourage feedback, build a community for your product, etc.
When you keep improving, you find out that you’re able to meet up with the changes happening. A lot of businesses are building an online presence in order to reach more people. It is expected that your business has an online presence too. That way, you can stay on track and keep improving.
-
Learn a tech skill
Learning a tech skill doesn’t mean you must work in tech. If the world is going to keep changing because of tech, it is wise that you have an idea of what it is about and find ways to stay afloat. You never know when it might come in handy.
Having an extra skill never hurts anyone. Learning a tech skill might be a bit difficult for you if it’s something you aren’t familiar with but it’s important.
You can learn at your own pace whilst building your business or pursuing your career. Don’t just ignore it because you don’t intend to transition into tech. If you can’t tell the future, it’s better you’re keeping up with the present so you won’t be caught unawares.
-
Brand your business with Tech
You don’t have to work in the tech industry but you can use tech as a business tool. Individuals, brands and companies are fast adapting. Social media platforms exist as a marketing tool for everyone.
There are a number of skills like social management, digital marketing, product management, graphics design, etc you can learn or even employ someone to do for you that can improve your business.
Don’t think because your products or services are offline, online platforms aren’t necessary. It’s not just about your services or the environment, branding your business and creating an online presence gives you a level of visibility and increased productivity.
CONCLUSION
Change, they say, is constant. A lot of people are still finding a way to adjust to the new realities of tech. The tech industry is profitable but that doesn’t mean you cannot build a business or career from anything else. You just have to stay creative and innovative. Keep improving your brand and know when to make appropriate changes if need be. Of course, there’s a lot of money in tech.
While you are wanting to go in and make all the money you want, ensure you’re skilled and able to deliver what is required. It is currently a high paying industry, but don’t be deceived. It’s a lot of hard work too. It requires all the commitment, discipline and patience any other work might require. It comes with its own frustrations too. But if you’re ready to put in the work, you’ll surely smile at the end of the day.
