Change, as they say, is constant but funny enough, a lasting change isn’t. It is inevitable in the world of man, the lives of man to mention but a few. It includes both positive and negative changes as the case may be. Often, it is difficult to tell if the changes taking place at a particular time is a positive or negative lasting change. In the long run, it often reveals itself and most times difficult to reverse the damages if any were made.
Nobody will expect me to talk on ways in which you can make negative lasting change, of course, that would probably be absurd. Temporary changes are what most of us experience while trying to make a lasting change. We start the process, it seems difficult like all things are, then we back out. Making the small positive changes that were made to dwindle as though they were never made.
People who fall in this category are people who start dieting, people who start-up small businesses, people who engage in get-rich-quick schemes to mention but a few. We all know nothing good comes easy, though some may have a reason or two to doubt that, I still believe it’s true.
So, the moment the result of dieting start showing, they quit as though it’s not a reversible reaction. For those who start-up small business, once the profit is not pilling up as expected they quit. Let’s not even talk about the get-rich-quick scheme people. We all know what happens when the money doesn’t arrive on time.
All these people fail to realize the universal truth which is for one to have a lasting change, consistency must be in play. Believe me, when I say this, consistency doesn’t have a time frame. That which you need to do will have to become a daily routine for most of your life if not all of your lifetime.
Great Positive change is reversible in the absence of consistency. -DollyMchottney
Talking about the three elementary steps that must be made to make a lasting change, it’s common to all. These are the small changes a person will make to become a better person; a business will make to maximize profit and productivity as well as reduce cost and also a country will make to better the lives of the citizens and govern the people way better.
- Funny enough, it now sounds like our Nigerian brothers will need this the most
Lest we forget, it is the same lasting change the world needs to become a peaceful and a more prosperous place

Raise your standards
There are a lot of grey areas in that heading “raise your standards”. When I say raise your standard, I don’t mean creating unrealistic standards and neither do I mean raising it from expecting the worst to expecting another worse case that somewhat seems better than the former. This is you raising standards too but there should be a limit for you to know that you’ve raised your standards the way you want it.
- What’s the limit? I can’t categorically tell you, but trust me it’s in my head. I guess it’s in yours too
Alright, raising standards is all about demanding a certain level of things for yourself and you will never tolerate going below that level you have set. Many a time, you demand the best for yourself. You demand to be the best in whatever you lay your hands in, you demand to get the best out of life and you work towards achieving it.
- If only we could achieve all these by just demanding, won’t it be lovely?
But in reality, demands will not get you to the height you need to attain. Which takes us to the second step
-
Change your limiting beliefs towards making a lasting change
I won’t be wrong if I say even after raising your standard, it’s still possible to believe in your limitations. This is you raising your standards but still doubting you could achieve them. If it’s not you sabotaging yourself, then I don’t know what it is. Our beliefs are commands imputed in us by ourselves telling us the height we can attain, what we can do and what we can’t do. Practically it controls our actions to a great extent. The mind and the body works with whatever you feed it.
The popular saying “Aim high to achieve little” elucidates the fact that whenever you aim for the best without limiting yourself you would at the very least achieve something. This further explicates that limiting yourself to little could eventually end up in you achieving nothing.
So, changing your belief system is central to making any real and lasting change in your life. We must develop a sense of certainty that the standard we are about to set can be achieved, before embarking on setting such standards.
Raising your standards without the conviction that you can achieve it is like wanting to pass an exam without reading which is practically impossible.
- Those that do examination malpractice will falsify that. But you all get my point.
How much do you think Nelson Mandela would have achieved if he did not have the conviction that he will succeed? Having such a conviction means that it will take only death to stop you from reaching such standards
- Will Raising your standards and having the conviction that you can achieve it enough to make a lasting change?
You’ll get to know when we get to the third step

Work towards making a lasting change
The first two steps are the foundations needed. The real deal is the work. If we hope for the best in life, be convinced that we’ll get it, but don’t work towards it, the result will be similar to that of an idle man not doing nothing.
- like there is an idle man that does something {lol}.
Knowledge they say is power but without application {working}, it leads to poverty
- If poverty is the lasting change you need, I just gave you free tips. You can thank me later {Lol}
For those of us who need success in various aspects of life, you need to work. So work hard and accompany it by working smart.
- Hard work pays.

It’s one thing to work hard and another thing to work smart. Working hard is good, but working smart will help in saving you from some stress. To do that you need strategies. Setting standard, having the conviction and working towards it is all you need, but you still have to set plans that will guide the way you work so you won’t have to overstress yourself.
There’s nothing new under the face of the earth. If that’s true, whatever you are embarking on has a 95% chance that someone has embarked on it before. Prepare by doing a lot of research on people who have embarked on it before and study that which made them succeed in it. However, if they failed, try to find out their errors.
Preferably, Stick to a role model {one who succeeded}. Learn what they’re doing, what their core beliefs are, and how they think. Not only will this make you more effective, but it will also save you a huge amount of time because you won’t have to reinvent the wheel. You can fine-tune it, reshape it, and perhaps even make it better.
