-
Communication
Just like any other form of a romantic relationship, communication is key. It’s the bedrock on which all other strategies lie.
Also, a new study that just came out suggests that yes, couples in long-distance relationships have more meaningful interactions than those who just see each other every day.
This is not to say that everybody in a long-distance relationship communicates often. However, if you want your relationship to turn out good, it’s best you communicate often.
The good news is that it will give you the opportunity to know your partner better and also lead to a higher level of intimacy.
Who would have thought? Basically, this study implies that in order to keep the romance alive, because of the much distance between them, there is bound to be deeper communication.
These communications include:
- What they want in the future
- How they see love
- Importance of trust in a relationship etc.
In as much as communication is key in a long-distance relationship, it’s obvious you have a whole lot to gain in these conversations.

Plan
It is important to have some sort of plan on how you will be at least living with each other in the future. There are so many men and women who happen to be in relationships that are destined to fail.
Take, for example, he’s stationed in Japan and plans to be in the military for the next 20 years, and you as the lady have your tenure as a professor in Middlebury College.
It’s obvious that there’s no way that you are going to be together in the future because he lives so far away and you do not plan to leave the college you are teaching presently.
So, why fuel such a relationship. Though you might feel something really strong for this person, unless there’s some path to be together in the future, then it is not worth investing your emotional energy into this person.
This seems like an extreme scenario. However, there are a whole lot of people who happen to be in this situation or something similar.
So, if it happens to you or if you’re in a situation like that right now, be realistic about what’s going on. Be real about the logistics of your relationship.
If you continue to lie to yourself and think you’ll address it later, you’ll end up wasting precious years of your life hoping that something is going to change when in reality, it won’t.

Quality time not quantity time
If you are in a long-distance relationship, focus on quality time spent together, not quantity time.
Both men and women are guilty of getting this wrong when it comes to a long-distance relationship because they think that constant contact is the best way to maintain the relationship.
You see one or both parties texting immediately after lunch, after getting home from work etc. With the mindset that having a lot of quantity of time is the best way to maintain the relationship.
However, I don’t believe that relationships are formed and stronger through constant texting or constant face timing, or anything like that.
I believe that it’s the quality of those interactions that really matter. That being said, I believe it is better to send a few strategic texts throughout the day that will make his/her day, rather than sending more than 30 texts throughout the day that just kind of bug him/her throughout the day.
So, I recommend that it’s better to wait throughout the day and let the tension build-up. By doing this, you’ll use that time at night before going to bed to spend quality time discussing.
In summary, in as much communication is key in making a long-distance relationship work, don’t overdo it, and don’t over-communicate.
-
Surprises
Surprise him/her every once in a while. This could be maybe leaving a note under his/her pillow after you leave, so they get the letter the next night before going to bed.
Also, you can send him/her an actual mail or just sending a text he/she wouldn’t normally expect from you.
This is an easy way you can keep your long-distance relationship going.
-
Spontaneity
Spontaneity is essential in any form of relationship and a long-distance romantic relationship is not any different.
Though a structure is needed in a long-distance relationship because of the nature of the work of both parties, this doesn’t mean you shouldn’t do things to throw some flavour into the relationship.
So, everything doesn’t always have to fall within the agreed structure. There can be surprising visits, surprise calls and even gifts every now and then to spice things in the relationship.
These little things will help break the rhythm so to speak and in a good way though.
So, if you really want to prove that out of sight is not out of mind in your relationship, spontaneity will go a long way to achieving that.
