It’s no news that Nigerian students who are preparing for jamb are always fond of asking questions about how to pass jamb? how to go about with their jamb registration? i.e step by step process for Jamb registration. Well, this is not what this article is all about.
Registration for Jamb often changes year in year out. Going about reading a blog post that was designed to tell you the step for Jamb 2016 registration when you are preparing for Jamb 2020 will be disastrous.
As at when I registered, all you need is to go to a cybercafe. you’ll get your scratch card there and be registered immediately. However, there’s something called E-pin now, NIN registration will soon be needed and all of that.
Also, the steps taken to register for jamb is not of your making. What we will be discussing is of your making. Read along
Very few ask questions like what do I need to know before Jamb registration? what do I do before Jamb registration? What are the requirements for Jamb registration? etc. These things are as important as knowing the steps to take for Jamb registration reasons being that even after knowing the steps, you still won’t register it yourself.
This article is going to be an eye-opener to the things you ought to know so you won’t have difficulties with your school clearance even after passing Jamb and Post Utme. Spoilers alert: you can be admitted and still not be cleared.
I’ll advise you read clearly and carefully so that you will avoid similar mistakes that Jambites make year in year out because they were ignorant. These mistakes range from incorrect information, choosing the wrong school of choice, wrong courses etc.
Things to know/do before Jamb registration
Know your possible School of choice
There are lots of courses to study in Nigerian schools and the numbers are increasing by the day. However, no school in Nigeria offer all these courses. For example, if your plan is to study just economics, Uniben is not the place for you reasons being that they offer economics in the form of Economics and statistics. After graduating, you’ll receive double honours i.e one for economics, and the other for statistics which is different from the single honour if you go for a school offering just economics. Before going about registering for Jamb it’s advisable you know the schools that offer these courses to avoid stories that touch.
Also, before going ahead for Jamb application, there are other factors to consider. There are lot’s of good schools to choose from e.g Unilag, Uniben, Uniport, Lasu, Auchi Polytechnic etc. These Factors include
- The course content of the University
- The reputation of the University
- Graduate employment rate
- The general ranking of the institution
- The quality of facilities present at the university.
Know your subject combinations
Just the thought of this put a smile on my face. You need to see some people subject combinations when they apply for Jamb. How can somebody be going for Mechanical engineering fill Use of English (which is compulsory), mathematics, chemistry and Agric as his/her subject combinations? Just because he/she believes physics is too hard. Going ahead to pass jamb afterwards will do such person little or no good. Before going about to register jamb, this is something you should be conversant with. Failure to do so, be ready for another Jamb application the next year
Know your strengths
It’s high time you realized that all courses are worth studying in a tertiary institution be it university, polytechnics or college of education. Though some courses increase your chances of being successful, it doesn’t make any course a guarantee for success. If you know that a particular course is saturated and the spaces are low, it’s advisable you go for such a course if you are determined to work hard for it. Otherwise, take a less saturated course and be admitted once and for all. Your course of study doesn’t determine your success in life.
O-level Requirements
This has changed the fate of many Nigerian students. After sitting for either waec, neco, gce etc as the case may be, the number of subjects resulting to at least a credit i.e C will determine if you can be admitted into any university while the subject you credit determine the courses you can go for. In Nigeria, most universities require you to have at least a credit in 5 subjects with maths and English included. After that, the subjects that you credited will determine what course you can go for.
Back then in my secondary school days, most of the girls dreamt of studying medical courses or any non-mathematical related courses as the case may be. Due to mass failure in Biology and the unwillingness to sit for waec again, My secondary school produced a lot of engineering and physical science students. Go through your O-level result again so you can know the courses you are eligible to study and fill your Jamb form accordingly.
Financial capability
Gone are the days where education was for everyone. It’s slowly becoming for the rich only. Students in the same school now pay different acceptance fee and school fees because of the difference in courses. Having that in mind, you need to know your financial capability or the financial capability of your sponsor. Knowing that will determine your choice of school and course to apply for. As things stand, Uniben is still one of the cheapest federal school you can find around.
School location
Safety is the most important factor to consider in whatever you do in life. Due to the insecurities in Nigeria courtesy the Fulani herdsmen and the Boko haram, it’s advisable you stay far away from their territory. Na school you wan go nor be war front (lol).
NIN registration
In addition to other jamb registration details, in effect from 2021, NIN registration ought to have been completed before going ahead to register Jamb
