WHY PRACTICING PROPER LIFE’S ETIQUETTES IS SO IMPORTANT
Having and practising proper life’s etiquettes is not something that just came to be, it has actually been in existence since the history of time. However, from the beginning of its existence (which you really don’t expect me to know) to our present time, there has really been a drastic decline in the way and manner it is practised.
I believe it happened as though because we don’t really understand what etiquettes are. But come to think of it, what does etiquette really mean? Simply put, etiquettes are ways in which we show respect for ourselves and others alike. I like to call it your “code of conduct” or “common courtesy”. They are just attitudes and behaviours you pull around your fellow humans.
It should be noted that etiquettes go beyond the way you comport and compose yourself at the table. You can be great or nearly perfect at observing a good number of table manners if not all, and behave terribly in portraying good life’s etiquettes at the same time. In this light, practising the proper and appropriate etiquettes of life will always make you be exceptional in a world full of arrogance and haughtiness.
Etiquettes are not what we are supposed to think before doing it. Your thinking of it probably means you’ll end up not doing it because your mind would actually be looking for reasons to do such a thing, and trust me, it won’t find any, even if it does find one, it won’t still be willing to play along. So, keep your mind out of this and bring your heart out.
KIND OF ETIQUETTES WE CAN PRACTICE DAILY
There are varied kinds of etiquettes which we can practice within our own little space of the world, some of which are:
- Learn to exchange pleasantries—it will help to build stronger and healthier relationships
- Learn to say “thank you” whenever help is offered to you—people always want to offer more help to those who are appreciative.
- Avoid manspreading—if at all you can’t resist doing it, then save up to get your own car.
- Always be polite in your manner of approach to people, no matter their status—you’re seriously not better off than anyone on this earth.
- Always be on time—seriously nobody likes to be kept waiting, we’re as busy as you’re.
- Say “excuse me” when need to go through a place full of people, or whenever time it may be necessary.
- When you offend someone, don’t hesitate to say “I’m sorry”—trust me, it heals faster more than any painkiller.
- Always say “Please” whenever you need help from other people—you’re not the boss of anyone, even if you literally are, you still don’t own their lives.
- Never you speak ill of people, or discuss them behind their backs—nobody wants to be talked badly of, behind their backs.
- Treat others the exact way you would want to be treated.
- Volunteer to offer help freely.
- Be dressed the way you want to be addressed.
- Learn to keep your voice down—to its minimal volume—in public places.
- Appreciate every little thing done for you.
- Always smile—it doesn’t cost you anything.
- Work with enthusiasm—even if you won’t be paid.
- Be humble—your arrogance and pride will lead you straight for havoc.
- Be honest—you stand to gain nothing with lies.
- Always try to avoid chatter and meaningless arguments—you won’t get a trophy for best arguer.
- Deal with people equally, without prejudice and bias.
These above etiquettes are just a fraction of the numerous ones that exist. You can think of others for yourself; as long as it is the proper way to behave in a world full of so much arrogance and self-centeredness, then it’s acceptable.
Moreover, since you now have a glimpse of what etiquettes are, it should be better to also know why practising it is so important and should be adopted by every one of us. This is necessary because a lot of emphases are not being made on the subject of etiquettes, I guess that’s why there is less kindness and humaneness in our world today. However, you can make it a less cruel world by making sure you practice such etiquette.
IMPORTANCE OF PRACTICING PROPER LIFE’S ETIQUETTE
Here are some of its importance;
-
IT FOSTERS SERENITY AND TRANQUILITY
If you’re the type that practices proper etiquette, especially the ones that involves you relating with other people, there is a serene environment it creates around you. The peace and calmness you would feel will be enormous because people around you would be happy to have you around.
A person who truly values peace and calmness both from within and without knows how important and necessary it is to portray the right etiquettes. Opting for the reverse means you don’t really want true peace and tranquillity, and in turn, you would always want to be in some kind of dispute or disagreement with people around you.
-
IT MAKES YOU A BETTER PERSON
As long as the etiquettes you practice are the proper ones, it will help develop you personally as an individual.
Practising the right etiquette is so vital because it is just another self-development strategy. You can’t improve and groom yourself right when you obviously have this area out of your life, out of point, trust me, your self-development won’t be inclusive because you’re missing a salient spot.
Etiquettes such as modesty in dressing, being punctual and always on time, serving others by putting their needs before yours, honesty and the like, are just a few ones that help in building oneself up in terms of developing the right character and behaviour.
-
IT BUILDS A GOOD REPUTATION
Being that you’re always careful in observing the proper etiquettes in your life, people will always tell good of you because they can see the way you behave both in character and in person.
Having a good reputation simply means you get good judgement about yourself from people around you. And it is a good thing because since you’re a reputable person, people will always want to come to you for help and support, for they trust in you.
You honestly don’t want to build a terrible reputation for yourself and your future or ruin the good one you already have by not being a little nice to people. So, you must practice the right etiquettes and do them with all fullness of heart so that people can have a good report of you.
-
IT GEARS AT PEACEFUL CO-EXISTENCE
If a larger percentage of the people of the world practice a good etiquette system, then it would help in living at peace with one another. A single good person cannot bring peace and harmonious co-existence between people of the society, only when the number of such good persons increases that peaceful co-existence can exist among people of the society.
Practising good etiquette helps to promote peaceful coexistence, as everyone will be treated with equity and fairness. So, every one of us should try to put into practice the proper etiquette to live peacefully with those around us.
-
IT HELPS REVEALS ONE’S BEHAVIOR
Now most of us don’t really know how terribly we may behave at times, especially to others. We just do things without taking note of how they will affect others and even ourselves.
However, practising good etiquette will make you see clearly and vividly. Those areas of your life that you’ve not really done well. It helps you see some certain behaviour in yourself that you didn’t even know you have because it has become second nature to you. In this light, we must learn how to practice the proper etiquettes so that we can portray behaviours and manners that can be reckoned with, anytime, any day.
-
IT MAKES THE WORLD A LESS TOXIC PLACE OF DWELLING
We’ll know that the toxicity of this world has gone beyond what can be remedied or completely cured, as a matter of fact,, the cruelty gets worse by the day and this evokes social unrest.
However, such toxicity and cruelty can be alleviated by changing the way you treat people in your own little corner of the earth. And practising good and proper etiquette makes you treat people rightly. It also shows that you value and respect them as fellow humans.
Honestly speaking, what the world needs now is not more aggressive and self-centred people, neither does it need people who don’t value and respect other humans. It actually needs people of more good behaviour and those that practice the proper etiquettes in terms of relating with others, only then can the toxicity of the world be reduced and by then people can lead and live a happier life because they feel valued.
