Can I use the same earth rod for both earthing and lightning arrester
Hi guys. Still, on electrical tutorials, we’ll be taking a look at if it’s advisable to use the same earth rod for both earthing your home and for lightning arrester.
In previous articles, we’ve talked about the meaning of earthing and that of lightning arrestors. We’ve also looked at the various ways you can earth your house and install lightning arresters in your house. Also, we threw some light on the difference between earthing and lightening arresters and why they are both necessary in a house. Lastly, we took a look at why we need charcoal and industrial salt while inserting earth rods to the ground.
Why you can’t use the same earth rod for both earthing and lightning arresters
From the heading, I’ve answered the question above. Yes, you can use the same earth rod for both earthing and lightning arrestor but it is disastrous. So, don’t ever try using the same earth rod for both earthing and lightning arrester. The next question would be “why can’t I use similar earth rod for both earthing and lightning arrester?” It’s pretty simple.
It technically has no effect till there’s a lightning strike. The voltage associated with the lightning will cause current to flow from the lightning arrester to the general earth of the mass via the copper tape and copper rod. Remember you’ve connected the earthing of the house to the same rod. Due to the high voltage, some current will escape and flow to all the earth links in the house which will technically destroy some of the electrical equipment if not all in the house.
For this reason, it’s advisable to use different earth rode for earthing and lightning arresters in your house.

What is the cause of thunder?
The flow of electrons from one cloud to another.
Why do we use 4 earth rod
The more the earth rod, the better. The earth mat provides 4 spaces for earth rods
I think technically when a thunder current runs through the same line of earthing installation of the house, it can’t pass through the circuits breaker the breaker will break and isolate the building line immediately.
can I use insulated copper wire to install thunder arrestor in place of copper tape?
not advisable
Thank U all it is useful to me
